El ave está perchada en el tronco de un roble en posición acrobática, las patas agarradas al tronco y el cuerpo más abajo, apoyando la cola en el tronco del árbol. Lleva una larva en el pico que es largo y curvado hacia abajo. El fondo es de color verde difuminado.

Su plumaje resulta muy críptico. El dorso y las alas muestran un mosaico de colores marrones-castaños de diferentes intensidades, salpicado con motas más claras, grises o crema. Las partes inferiores de su cuerpo, por el contrario, son de color blancuzco.

Yellow in the Undergrowth

Here’s a scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea)—female, I believe. I captured this image years ago while she lingered in an oak tree just beyond my fence. It was the first time I’d photographed one, and I remember thinking: maybe I’ll see a male someday. Who knows.
