Introducing ActivityPub.Space

The in-person events at FediCon in Vancouver lit a fire in the Canadian ActivityPub community. One of the louder calls were for a place in the fediverse for ActivityPub discussions; a place for groups to form and for long-running discussions to be had.

I was more than happy to get involved. I also wanted such a place, and I've discussed it on and off for the past year.

"There are several possible dates you might pick, but for me it will always be September 5th 2014 - when I committed the first sketch of a specification I called ActivityPump and pushed it to Github."

Happy 11th birthday, ActivityPub!

Improving accessibility in the Fediverse and the ATmosphere

https://thenexusofprivacy.net/improving-accessibility/

One way that fedi is really unique is that so many people take the time to put alt-text on their images -- so low-vision and blind people participate much more fully than on other social networks. That said, at least half the images on most instances don't have alt-text. And alt-text is only one of many aspects of accessibility -- while some fedi software works well for people using screenreaders and other assistive technology, there's still a lot of room for improvement. Meanwhile on Bluesky and the ATmosphere ... well let's just say there's even more room for improvement.

So, let's make things better!

As a first step, let's focus on gathering information -- resources, tips, known issues, suggestions for improvements, and best practices or sources of inspiration in other software. There are some specific questions in the replies (and a few examples of resources) but really anything accessibility-related is good. This is brainstorming, so It's fine if to suggest something that's not fully fleshed out!

Please share your perspectives here, or in this CryptPad form if you prefer.

I'll collect the responses and follow up with a post here, on the Nexus of Privacy newsletter , and on the #accessibility hashtag. I've already talked with a couple of development teams who are interested in finding out what they can do, and since user education is an important aspect as well there will be plenty of ways people who aren't developers can help too!

And if you're interested in helping out on this project, please let me know! (1/N) 🧵

@jensimmons Would asking for custom protocol handler support across all browsers be appropriate? Or standardizing a web+AP handler for #activitypub being baked into browsers by default?
