Greenock Cemetery Cross
Greenock Cemetery, Greenock, South Australia.
Greenock cemetery was established in the mid-19th century, with the earliest formal burial recorded in November 1865. However, the oldest headstone belongs to a two-week-old baby, Sophie Ronnfeldt, who died in August of that same year.
In 1866, the Bevan family, who were the original owners of the land, conveyed ownership of the cemetery to local trustees for a nominal fee. The intention was for the allotments to eventually be transferred to the Corporation once Greenock became a Corporate Town.
The central feature of the cemetery is a large marble cross, which serves as a memorial for members of the Seppelt family, a prominent name in the Barossa Valley's history.
