I made some custom software for editing raw files; one part "film simulator" based on some physical assumptions of film, one part "edit files quick and dirty."
Recently I've started changing it a little bit to improve it in a few ways, and one thing I tried increased the dimensionality of one part of one formula. This introduced some really interesting numerical instability. I have no idea why it's doing this!
"Normal" vs. "New"

Same picture, but shadows and, particularly inexplicably, some yellow flowers, are all driven to a hard, digital, noisy purple. The rest of the picture looks similar to the other, except overall slightly more saturated and slightly brighter.

Picture of a plaza with white trees in bloom. Some people spaced out widely. Interesting light.
