Azure Damselfly (Coenagrion puella) photographed on Whixall Moss, Shropshire, UK, last summer. This one is a male (the females are green and black). Diagnostic features for this species include a coenagrion spur (the black line extending part way along the side of the thorax) and the U-shaped mark on segment 2, just below the wing base.

A large insect with a long, slender abdomen with bright blue and black markings. It has a large pair of eyes giving it almost all-round vision. Two pairs of wings are folded parallel to the body (which distinguishes damselflies from dragonflies). Each of the four wings, which are otherwise translucent, has a small dark segment near the apex. The insect is resting in bright sunlight on a leaf.
