Northern Flicker (top) Yellow-bellied Sapsucker(bottom) Both of these species are considered woodpeckers but the Northern Flicker prefers foraging on the ground for grubs and worms. The Flicker flew down and made a hole in the snow then proceeded to peck into the ground. It jumped out of the hole and then the Sapsucker flew down and looked around in the hole opportunistically hoping the Flicker had found something to eat. Then the Flicker turned around as if to say “What do you think you’re doing?!” This observation shows that even though sapsuckers prefer to peck on trees they will watch for opportunities elsewhere. Kinda interesting…
