Bei ihrer Eröffnung 1886 noch ein Sinnbild moderner Zeiten, ist die Standseilbahn in #Lugano zwischen Oberstadt und Kai inzwischen Geschichte, die Trasse von Grün überwuchert. Aber die steile Treppe daneben wird weiterhin genutzt als Fußweg, jetzt für die Fitness - moderne Zeiten heute.

Opened in 1886 as a symbol of modernity, the funicular railway between the upper town and the quay of Lugano is now history, its track rotten and overgrown. But the steep flight of stairs next to it is still used as a footpath, mostly for fitness - modern times of today! Description: Looking up. Something from this day in 2019 when we'd docked in Genoa then taken a boat ride along the Ligurian coast to a few towns and villages along the way. The final one had been Portofino and that's it you can see on and beyond the cliff edges here. The church is Chiesa di San Giorgio and the castle is Castello Brown.

Sheer but craggy cliffs of no less than twenty metres in height and no more than double that on the far right of the view line the picture from left to right. The rock is warm-toned with deep shadows in some of its clefts and ridges. Shrubbery and trees line the top of the cliff edge on the left side and climb upwards on the right following the rocky contours but there is a gap just left of middle through which we can see orange and yellow-coloured buildings of some age and several storeys in height as well as a church with tower, all painted in yellow and white. Above the tower height on the cliffs to the right there is a castle poking over the tops of the dense tree coverage there, while rising up the ridge to its right more trees grow including some solitary cypress trees that give away this Mediterranean location. The sky is bright but filled with huge, high, pillow-like clouds that only show a few patches of pale blue in the gaps.

It's #ThrowbackThursday and here's our first foreign family holiday in the mid 1980s to Alcudia, Mallorca. The hotel was mostly occupied by German tourists and I recall seeing the young German man on the far side in his Miami Dolphins Dan Marino NFL shirt a lot. I was a Patriots fan even back then and knew the enemy when I spotted it.

Костёл Преображения Господня


Костёл был возведён в Германовичах в 1787 году на средства Игнатия Ширина, тогдашнего владельца местечка, в традициях "виленского" барокко.


С 1948 по 1988 годы храм был закрыт и приспособлен под хозяйственные нужды, о чём свидетельствует надпись на мраморной плите внутри костёла. В интерьере частично сохранились полихромные росписи, на парапете хора – декоративная композиция из музыкальных инструментов.


Рядом с костёлом находятся могилы представителей рода Ширинов, владевших Германовичами до 1939 года.


В последние годы костёл понемногу реставрируют, но до окончания, похоже, ещё далеко. Пока только восстановили внутреннее пространство.

This is the 15th century town hall in Damme, Belgium, with its obvious Gothic architectural style with Flemish touches in the stepped gables on the roof. The clock tower contains both a mechanical timepiece and a sundial as backup and the town hall hosts the two oldest bells in the Flanders region, both from the late 14th century.

It's a crisp, clear day, early in the morning and early in the year with a vibrant but cold blue sky overhead. We're in the small square in front of a small town hall in Belgium. A statue, a fountain, and some cars are nearby, and there are some low white houses with red tiled roofs to the left but it's the town hall that we're most interested in. It's built from pale grey stone with two high storeys before it meets a steep roof of grey tiles that is as tall again as the two floors it is supported by. The lower floor looks to be mostly for storage as the doors and windows are small and closed up. In the centre of the upper floor is the main door, reached by stone steps that ascend from the left and right below, with stone banisters and a stone portico at the top. Either side are niches in the upper storey where statues of important figures are erected. The windows are tall and narrow. At each end of the building the roof ends in stepped gables typical of northern European architecture. Centrally on the roof there is a small clock tower, hexagonal or octagonal in form with some red wooden railings and framed windows beneath the pyramidal spire.
