My thoughts on Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, part 1

Can't help but feel that if Marcus Aurelius was born somewhere between 1970-1990 he'd now be a tech CEO. The weird spiritual type in a beige linen shirt.

And going in, I knew that the techbros have claimed him and are actively ruining this book for everyone else, but I thought there's a very strong funhouse mirror effect. It turns out you don't even need that much mental gymnastics to make it a techbro bible, everything (from a weird cult of labor to trying to transcend hunanity and becoming a true sigma) is already there.

Ancient Origins Reconstructing the story of humanity's past

Romans Mastered Nanotechnology and Used it for Eye Catching Decoration | Ancient Origins

A strange chalice made its way into the British Museum’s collection in the 1950s. It is a 1,600-year-old jade green Roman artifact called the Lycurgus Cup. The image on the chalice is an iconic scene with King Lycurgus of Thrace...

Ancient Origins Reconstructing the story of humanity's past

The Sicarii: The Jewish Daggermen With a Thirst for Roman Blood | Ancient Origins

The Sicarii - which may be translated as ‘daggermen’ from the Latin - were a group of Jewish zealots who lived during the 1st century AD. The Sicarii intended to expel the Romans and their collaborators from Judaea, and resisted their rule. One of the tools they employed in their effort to achieve this end was assassination, especially in crowded places, which was calculated to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. The Sicarii are often considered to be one of the earliest groups of terrorists in human history.

A Roman milestone from the 3rd century, standing in the heart of Esztergom, Hungary.
This stone once marked distances along a Roman military road, later known as the Via Publica.

A quiet reminder that modern cities often grow directly on top of ancient infrastructure.
