Grand Union canal towpath. Here the canal enters a tunnel, while the towpath separates, up a slope, through another short tunnel, and then 400 yards later rejoining the canal.Before motors, the narrow boats were propelled through with poles, or with boaters lying on top legging through with feet on the wall. #TowpathTuesday

Black and white photo showing two tunnels, the lower for the canal, the higher for the towpath. A group of walkers are about to enter the short higher tunnel. The tunnel at this point is protected by an iron rail (unseen, the floor of the tunnel is stone-paved and steep, with raised stones to help the horses manage the passage). The canal and towpath are surrounded by steep vegetation.
