If ATProto is as decentralized as Bluesky the company likes to claim, there should be absolutely no need for said company to sponsor ICE by providing them with social media infrastructure. If ICE wants to host a presence on the ATProto part of the social web, then they can stand up their own infrastructure to do so — they definitely have the budget, after all.

Wow. Bluesky has just welcomed and verified ICE.

For anyone still thinking Bsky is a real alternative to Twitter: No, it's not.

Mastodon is. Bsky is just X at its infancy.

I kind of see the above, then, as breaking down into a two possible cases, neither of which look good for Bluesky-the-company:

• ATProto is not effectively decentralized, and ICE needs to use bsky.social to effectively be on ATProto — Bluesky then allowed that.
• ATProto is effectively decentralized, and ICE could use their own infrastructure, but Bluesky the company sponsored them instead.

@xgranade If Bluesky was decentralized, we'd see something closer to Mastodon with several unique servers and entrypoints into the ATProto ecosystem. However, I don't see that, as while ATProto can (in theory) be decentralized, the only major software using it is Bluesky. It's basically fake decentralization at this point, as even other platforms (or competing ones) will still be stuck using Bluesky's infrastructure for the protocol.
