“Sunset at Étretat”


Surrounded by cliffs, the beach of Étretat is relatively sheltered from prevailing winds.


This is a popular place to watch the sun set over the horizon.


The beach is made up of pebbles. These pebbles are a natural bulwark, necessary to protect the coastline. In fact, they contribute to this protection by acting as a “wave damper”, in the same way as artificial stonework would.

In a narrow side street where the pale yellow paint on the walls is flaking with age, a colour photograph of actress Sophia Lens hangs in a golden frame. There is graffiti on the walls which is the same blue as the sky in the painting, and red paint which matches the actress’s dress. Sophia is a lifelong supporter of Napoli football club and is revered in the area.
