β€œI really hope that…I can reach the kids who maybe have never seen themselves in a job like mine, that they can say, β€˜Look, if this meathead can do it, I can do it too.’ Because I really am. I'm just a regular dude, you know?”

Graphic novel series Kaboom! lifts off with a blast for Jay Odjick with Scholastic

Kid superhero Zack Commonda may have got his moniker β€œKaboom” by accident, but a loud kaboom is the exact impact creator and writer Jay Odjick is aiming for with his new graphic novel.Β β€œIf I'm going to do a book with a company as big as Scholastic, that's why it's called Kaboom! (because) we're going to make some noise,” said Odjick, a member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation in Quebec.Β

I went to Memorial Art Gallery today and fell in love with this painting before I even knew it was an #Indigenous artist.

George Morrison
Ojibwe, 1919-2000
Dawn, 1957
Oil on canvas

#rochesterny #art

An abstract painting. Sign reads:

George Morrison's paintings, like Dawn, are noted for their interconnected effects of light and form. Here, Morrison divides the composition into kaleidoscopic lines and shapes that are reminiscent of the refracted sunlight across earth, water, and sky.
Morrison was an internationally acclaimed artist whose work in painting, drawing, sculpture, and print conveyed the aesthetic, spiritual, and geographic influences of his Northern Minnesota home and Ojibwe heritage. He attended the Art Students League in New York City, where he forged friendships with artists including Louise Nevelson, whose work is also on view in this gallery.

β€œI seek the power of the rock, the magic of the water, the religion of the tree, the color of the wind, and the enigma of the horizon.”
