Looking for advice on a #cloud / #selfhosting setup, especially with cost in mind.
Right now I’m weighing:
1) #pikapods (managed, simple, monthly fee, privacy?)
2) Self-hosted #nextcloud on a small home server (higher upfront cost, more control, more maintenance)
I’m curious about:
- Long-term costs
- reliability / backups
- time & maintenance overhead
- Privacy and data ownership (I'm in the Eu)
Are there other good options I should consider? VPS + Nextcloud? Hosted alternatives? Something lighter than Nextcloud?

Super lightweight, no database, easy to set-up.
I will not replace my main #mastodon instance with it, but i really have some other use cases for it, for example some bots or so.
And from what I saw, the code also is pretty nice to learn things from it. (me, a c programming noob)

Feeling a little emotional today as I reflect back on one year of #selfhosting.

If you check out the full thread you can see some of the challenges I faced in the early days. It's only been a year but it feels like a lifetime ago. When I read back, I think: who was this person? _ (task) is so easy! Like, why be scared of tweaking DNS records? 😅
I will write about the highs and lows in a proper blog post. Spoiler alert: there were mostly HIGHS ☺️
For now, I want to express my gratitude to:

✨ @ilja who recommended I check out YunoHost (I had never heard of it before)

Growing tired of cloud storage subscriptions, and twitchy with cloud storage privacy. Spent a chunk of time today getting everything out of Google Drive/Photos and replaced with Borg backup and Syncthing to keep some level of automation between phone and laptop.
